Canada described this Monday as “not democratic” the Russian presidential elections that concluded on Sunday and that Vladimir Putin he won with 87.2% of the votes cast.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Mélanie Joly, stated in a statement that ““The presidential election in Russia was a non-democratic process that does not comply with international standards.” and that it was manipulated to favor Putin.
“Canada is deeply concerned about the flawed electoral process that concluded on March 17, 2024. Russia has violated international commitments to hold elections that it had previously agreed to,” Joly declared, also adding that Ottawa condemns the vote held in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, for the Russian people, Putin has built a political system in which human rights are denied. “His opponents are arrested or silenced, the free press does not operate and citizens are denied genuine political options,” added the Canadian minister.
According to the Central Electoral Commission of Russia, Putin won his fifth term as president of the country after obtaining a total of 76,277,708 votes, in elections that were held over three days and which recorded, according to official data, the highest citizen participation.
