One in three Venezuelans between 3 and 24 years of age does not study, according to survey

A total of 3,984,517 Venezuelans, aged between 3 and 24 years, they are not pursuing any type of studies, according to the 2023 Living Conditions Survey (Encovi), the results of which were presented this Wednesday by the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB).

The study demonstrated, after conducting interviews in 16,212 homes in the country, that the potential demand for students is 11,597,754 people, while the school population is 7,613,237, which leaves a 3. 4% of children and adolescents out of school for multiple reasons.

Among the reasons why these people drop out of school, the survey revealed that 19% of women between 18 and 24 years old who stop going to school do so because “pregnancy, taking care of children or taking care of the home.”

Global education coverage reached 66% in 2023, a 3% more than in 2022, but less than in 2016, when the 76% of the age population were enrolled in school.

Encovi, which is applied in Caracas and nine of the country’s 23 states, highlighted that only the 14% of men and twenty-one% of women between 18 and 24 years old continue their studies.

Likewise, the study revealed that the 60% of the student population attend classes regularly “with some normality”while a 40% He is absent from classrooms for reasons that include lack of food on campus, staff strikes for salary improvements, failures in basic services, and teacher non-attendance.

Furthermore, the study concluded that the 62% of primary and high school students receive free meals in schools and high schools, although only a few days a week.

According to the Government, some 8.82 million students began the current school year last October in more than 28,300 educational centers, which leaves out some universities, especially in the private sector, which mark their own periods independently.
