World Cup every two years would generate additional revenue of US $ 4.4 billion, says FIFA

The FIFA it told its member associations on Monday that the switch to a biennial World Cup would generate an additional $ 4.4 billion in revenue for the body.

FIFA is holding a ‘world summit’ of national association leaders to discuss its proposal that the World Cups be played every two years and not every four. The voting of the event that is part of the consultation process is not foreseen.

The optimistic reports stand in stark contrast to the analysis by critics of the proposal. There has been opposition from European clubs and major continental leagues and associations such as Conmebol and UEFA, whose president Aleksander Ceferin has threatened to boycott any additional tournaments.

Delegates at Monday’s summit were told that a report by the Italian company Open Economics had found that national leagues and UEFA competitions are not harmed by national team competitions and international club tournaments.

A Nielsen report predicted the plan would increase revenue from the $ 7 billion expected for a 48-team tournament over a four-year cycle to $ 11.4 billion, thanks to increased revenue from localities, media rights and sponsorship revenue. .

FIFA told delegates that each association would receive an additional $ 16 million over a four-year period from the extra revenue.
