Sejm. Two MPs did not support sanctions on food from Russia and Belarus

Grzegorz Braun and W³odzimierz Skalik are the only MPs who did not support the draft resolution on Thursday imposing sanctions on the import of Russian and Belarusian food and agricultural products to the European Union. MPs from the Confederation of the Polish Crown abstained from voting.

“We call on you to submit a proposal to impose sanctions in connection with the import of Russian and Belarusian food and agricultural products to the European Union,” we read in the decision adopted by the Sejm on Thursday. The project was supported by all clubs and was sent to the third reading. However, the MPs present in the room were not unanimous. Two who entered parliament on the Confederation’s lists abstained from voting.

They were MPs representing the Confederation of the Polish Crown, commonly known as the Crown. He founded the group in 2019, who is the party’s president. It was he who abstained from voting on the adoption of the resolution. The second MP is the vice-president of Korona, Włodzimierz Skalik.

The main motive of the adopted resolution was an appeal to the European Commission to impose sanctions on Belarus and its supporting country. “It is our moral obligation to stop trade that may directly or indirectly contribute to strengthening the ability of Russia and its supporting Belarus to continue the war with Ukraine, especially since Russian imports may include grain stolen from the occupied territories,” the resolution reads.

This is the main, but not the only, appeal contained in the document. Polish parliamentarians also called on the Council of the European Union to limit excessive imports from Ukraine and regulate the provisions. It was indicated that “excessive, unreasonable and costly” requirements for agriculture should be “suspended and corrected”. “Actions to protect climate must take into account the real needs and opportunities of European farmers,” it was noted.
