Chinese government includes hydrogen energy development in annual report

China has included for the first time the development of hydrogen as a source of clean energy in its government work report this year, reflecting its commitment to this sector in its transition towards a model less dependent on the coal.

According to the annual report on government work presented this Tuesday by Premier Li Qiang to the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s highest legislative body, China “will accelerate the development of hydrogen-based energy,” The economic newspaper Yicai reported this Wednesday.

Hydrogen is a source of clean energy, which only generates water as waste, and which can be applied to various means of transport, as well as industry and heating.

“This is the first time the hydrogen industry has been included in the government jobs report as a cutting-edge emerging sector, further cementing confidence in hydrogen energy,” The general manager of the company dedicated to this industry, Shanghai Hydrogen Propulsion Technology, Lu Bingbing, explained to Yicai.

For Zou Yuquan, CEO of SinoHyKey Technology, another company in the sector, the introduction of the hydrogen industry in the report means that “In the process of restructuring the energy system, the position and role of hydrogen have been accepted and recognized.”

“The attribute of hydrogen energy as clean energy will play a more important role in the future.””Zou added, quoted by Yicai.

China has set the goal of reaching peak carbon emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060, which implies a transformation of its energy model, currently dominated by coal.

Among China’s 31 provincial-level regions, 27 have already published industrial plans related to the use of hydrogen as an energy source, the media reported.

The authorities of the Asian giant explained in 2023 that China “already has a basic mastery of the main technologies and manufacturing processes for the preparation, storage, transportation and refueling of hydrogen.”

According to the Chinese Executive, the more than 35 million tons of hydrogen that the Asian country produced in 2022 made it the largest producer in the world.

In 2023, 5,790 hydrogen fuel-powered vehicles will be sold in China, a 72% more than the previous year.
