Lula “happy” about the date of the elections in Venezuela, but warns the opposition

The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvasaid this Wednesday to be “happy” with the announcement of the dates of the elections in Venezuela, which will be held on July 28, but issued a warning to the opposition to Nicolas Maduro.

Lula, who made brief statements to journalists before receiving the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, stated that during the meeting he had with Maduro last week on the sidelines of the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) , they assured him that the elections will have guarantees.

“What they told me in the meeting I had at Celac is that they are going to invite observers from around the world. But if the opposition candidate has the same behavior as ours here, nothing is worth it,” said Lula, alluding to former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022).

The National Electoral Council (CNE) announced on Tuesday that the Venezuelan elections will be held on July 28.

In this way, Venezuela respects the agreement between the Government and the main opposition coalition last October, when they agreed, in Barbados, that the elections would be held in the second half of the year.

The ruling party assures that President Nicolás Maduro will seek a third term, although the president has not confirmed his candidacy.

On the opposition side, the one chosen by the majority in the October primaries, María Corina Machado, is disqualified from holding elected office and, therefore, from running for president.
