The number of immigrants held in the detention centers of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) continues to increase, reaching 39,175 foreigners in federal custody in the last week of February, indicates a report revealed this Thursday by Syracuse University, in NY.
The figure of detained immigrants is the highest recorded in the Administration of President Joe Biden, which in December of last year counted in its immigration prisons a total of 36,755 people.
ICE detention centers in Texas are those with the highest average daily inmate population so far in fiscal year 2024, which began last October 1, highlights the report from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), a group of researchers from Syracuse University.
The Family Residential Center in Dilley is the one with the most immigrants houses, with a daily average of 1,845 people this year.
Of the 20,535 migrants sent to immigration jails, 6,510 migrants were arrested by ICE and 14,025 by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents.
The increase in detainees in ICE jails contrasts with the decrease in immigrants under the Alternative Detention (ATD) program, which monitors foreigners who are fighting their deportation cases in court.
Currently, 185,000 migrants are currently under ATD, 37% less than February 2023, when there were 293,000 monitored under this program.
Since May 12, 2023, the Biden Administration has expelled or returned more than 583,000 people, the vast majority of whom crossed the southwest border, including more than 92,000 families, according to information revealed this Thursday by ICE.
