A total of 14,035 migrants entered irregularly by sea or land Spain in the first two months of the year, an increase of 356.6% compared to the 2023 figures, according to data that the Spanish government made public this Friday.
Of the different routes to Spain that follows the irregular migrationthe largest increase was recorded in the Canary archipelago, located in northeast Africa.
Between January 1 and February 29, 181 boats arrived in the Canary Islands, a total of 11,932 migrants, compared to 1,865 last year.
To a lesser extent, arrivals by sea also increased to the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean, where a total of 1,552 immigrants arrived in 104 boats, 45% more than the previous year.
Meanwhile, only one arrived in the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, on the African shore of the Mediterranean. migrant by sea, compared to 15 a year before.
However, by land, 550 arrivals were recorded in both autonomous cities, which represents an increase of 276% in relation to January and February of last year.
It must be taken into account that this statistic of arrivals by land also includes migrants who reach Spanish territory by swimming, leaving the beaches of Morocco bound for the coast of the Spanish enclaves in North Africa.
