An international team led by Chinese scientists has developed a new electrolyte design that could change the fast charging of batteries. lithium ion batteriesthe Xinhua news agency reported in the last few hours.
The study, published in the journal Nature, presents a solution that allows batteries to be charged in just 10 minutes at room temperature, also expanding their operating range to extreme thermometries.
“Charging speed, operating temperature and safety are complex problems for the development of electric vehicles”, explains Fan Xiulin, professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University and leader of the research team.
“Lithium ion batteries for these vehicles require high density, fast charging and a wide temperature range”added the scientist.
The new electrolyte design, the result of four years of research, allows reaching an 80% charge in 10 minutes, an unprecedented speed in this type of battery.
Additionally, batteries with this new design can operate in a temperature range of -70°C to 60°C, making them suitable for extreme climates.
Fan’s team developed solvent evaluation strategies, selecting 23 solvent substances from among tens of thousands to prepare electrolytes for the study of lithium-ion batteries.
“This advance could have a significant impact on the development of green and low-carbon energy”says Fan.
