Chilean unions ask to increase the tariff on Chinese steel

The steel industry Chile has been facing unfair competition for the import of Chinese steel, warn the workers’ unions of Huachipato, Chile’s main steel company. The situation has led workers to demand an increase in tariffs on Chinese imports.

In conversation with the press, the president of Huachipato Workers’ Union 1, Héctor Medina, explained the need to apply an increase in Chinese steel export tariffs of between 20% and 25%a measure that would have to be approved by the anti-distortion commission of the Chilean Parliament.

In the midst of this situation, the deputies of the central Bío Bío region have already promoted a proposal to apply a safeguard to Chilean steel, which would make it possible to stop the sustained loss of benefits and jobs.

The deputy of the Christian Democrats, Eric Aedo, estimates that if new taxes to Chinese steel, more than 20,000 jobs could be lost directly and indirectly.
