The European Comission announced this Thursday that it will make the joint gas purchasing platform permanent, understanding that the first rounds of that system conceived during the crisis energy prices It has been a success.
“It will now become a permanent instrument in accordance with the regulations of the gas market recently agreed, taking advantage of their success as a tool of crisis management last year“, declared in a statement the vice president of the European Comission head of the Green Deal, Maros Sefcovic.
The community high command explained that, in the last round, a total of 19 industrial companies and consumers “have submitted applications for a total volume of almost 34,000 million cubic meters of gas (34 bcm)”.
Specifically, they have ordered 15.3 bcm of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and another 18.3 bcm of gas delivered by gas pipeline.
“This clearly shows that the joint purchase of gas is going from strength to strength“said Sefcovic, who recalled that in 2023, the Commission covered 42 bcm of aggregate demand for gas through the community bidding platform, which seeks to help interested large consumers negotiate lower joint prices.
“This helped calm markets and diversify purchasing options for European consumers, taking advantage of our economic weight collective”he added.
Once the new requests are added, the Commission invites gas suppliers to submit their offers to meet that demand.
This tender will open on February 26 and suppliers will have two days to present offers.
