‘There is no transport’, road crisis affects citizens in full electoral day in Chile

Mayors of several localities spoke about the agglomerations in their communes, as well as in the main cities of the country.

Numerous complaints regarding the lack of public transport stand out today in the middle of the second round of the presidential elections in Chile. The lack of public transportation to get people to the voting centers occupies the main headlines on the country’s news.

Claudio Orrego, governor of the Metropolitan region, explained that the Executive must guarantee this service in a such an important date, but unfortunately that is not happening.

In communes of Puente Alto, Maipú and Florida there are long lines at bus stops to go to vote, Orrego explained. The situation has been confirmed by the population in various reports from different radio stations, television channels and social networks.

The situation gets even worse in Santiago de Chile, capital of the country, where several voters had to walk up to an hour to get to the polls where they are registered. In other localities, citizens denounce wait up to two hours in order to achieve what in Chile is known as “micro”.

In the face of public discontent, the Minister of Transport, Gloria Hutt, gave statements to the press in the Palacio de La Moneda and assured that a presence of public transport was foreseen similar to an ordinary business day.

On the other hand, Constanza Schonhaut, member of the Constitutional Convention, called on the authorities to facilitate the right to vote in all parts of the country. (I)
