The EU inaugurates its Artificial Intelligence Office to promote the reliable use of AI

The European Union (EU) inaugurated this Wednesday its Artificial Intelligence Office, which will be “key” in the application of the community law of artificial intelligence and that will promote the development and “reliable” use of this technology, as well as international cooperation in the matter.

Around 100 people will work in the office, 20 of them reassigned from the department of the European Comission specialized in policy development for the digital era (“DG Connect”) and 80 hired as national agents and experts.

The office, according to the European Commission (EC) website, will have various tasks, including contributing to the “coherent” application of the rules of the law on artificial intelligence in the member states, creating codes of good practices and assessment tools and investigate possible rule violations.

The objective, explains the EC, is to create a center of expertise in AI to form the basis of a single European system of governance in the field.

The artificial intelligence law was agreed last December and allows or prohibits the use of AI depending on the threat it poses to people and identifies high-risk systems that can only be used if they are shown to respect fundamental rights.

The regulation, which also seeks to boost the European industry against giants such as China and USA, made the EU the first region in the world to fully regulate the uses of artificial intelligence.
