Poland took first place in terms of passenger car density – there are 703 vehicles per thousand inhabitants. However, in terms of the number of cars, we rank fifth (almost 26.5 million vehicles). Ahead of us are Germany (almost 48.8 million), Italy (40.2 million), France (38.9 million) and Great Britain (37.1 million) – according to the latest report of the European Association of Vehicle Manufacturers ACEA. In the entire EU, including Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Great Britain, there are almost 297.2 million cars. The data concerns the end of 2022 (the summary for last year is not yet available).
Does Poland have the most cars per thousand inhabitants? Data excludes “dead souls”
As the Polish Automotive Industry Association notes, there are over 7 million “dead souls” in the database of the Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers, used by ACEA and Eurostat. These are vehicles that are no longer on the road but have not yet been deregistered – writes “”.
According to the Samar Automotive Market Research Institute, after deducting these “dead souls”, there are only 517 cars per thousand inhabitants. – This shows that we are not a powerhouse in the automotive industry. And if we take into account the age of the park, we are far from the European average – commented Dariusz Balcerzyk, Samar expert, in an interview with the daily.
Poland is an automotive leader and, at the same time, an open-air museum in Europe
The average passenger car in Poland is 14.9 years old (the same is true in Romania) – according to data in the “Vehicles on European Roads” report. We don’t do too badly in this ranking. Statistically, cars in the Czech Republic (15.9 years), Latvia (15.2 years), Estonia (16.6 years) and Greece (17.3 years) are older. However, the youngest passenger cars drive on the streets in Luxembourg (they are on average 7.9 years old), Austria and Denmark (8.9 years old), Ireland (9.1 years old), and Belgium (9.8 years old). In Germany, a car is on average 10 years old.
In total, there are almost 6.5 million trucks on EU roads. Poland has by far the largest fleet of trucks in the entire EU (almost 1.3 million – the average age of a truck is 13.2 years). Germany has over 990,000 of them, and Italy – about 969,000. We are also leaders in terms of the number of buses. There are almost 721,000 of them throughout the EU, and Poland has almost 129,000. buses (the average age of a bus is 16.1 years). Second in the ranking is Italy (approx. 100,000 buses), followed by France (94,000).
In total, there are almost 31 million vehicles in Poland, according to data at the end of 2022. Germany has about 53 million of them, France almost 46 million, and Italy – about 45.7 million. There are nearly 290 million vehicles across the EU. As an interesting fact, it is worth mentioning that Poland has by far the most passenger cars powered by LPG – as much as 13.1%. Second in this ranking is Italy (7.2%), and third is Croatia (only 3.3%).
