Half the world has already condemned Navalny’s death, the Russian opponent par excellence. One of the last to do so has been the American president, Joe Biden. The Democrat has indicated without any doubt who is to blame: Vladimir Putin.
“Putin is responsible for Navalni’s death,” he said in a video this Friday afternoon. Already in 2021, before the outbreak of the war in ukraineJoe Biden warned Putin that the consequences it could have Navalny’s death would be “devastating.” Although, at the moment none has been announced.
The rest of the international community has been quick to accuse Putin and his henchmen. One of them has been the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, who has already stated that “Putin and his friends fear nothing more than people who stand up, speak, who fight for freedom.” “The world has lost a freedom fighter”he lamented.
Others, like NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, ask for explanations that do not come. “It is necessary to establish all the facts. Russia has serious questions to answer“, the head of the Atlantic Alliance told reporters, who, in turn, stated that he was “deeply saddened and concerned” by the news.
“My thoughts are directed to his family and his loved ones, and we remain committed to supporting all those who believe in democracy and freedom, as Alexei Navalny has done for so many years,” continued Stoltenberg, who did not hesitate to criticize the “increasingly authoritarian power”which Russia has become and which “have used oppression against the opposition for many years.”
So far, the Kremlin has limited itself to saying that Western accusations are unacceptablewhile they invite us to wait for the results of the autopsy.
Putin’s version
According to Russia, Navalny suffered an accident after taking a walk and that they tried to revive him without success.
At the time the news was already circulating, the Russian president was visiting a forging factory and chatting with the workers. Despite how oblivious Putin seems to be to the news, this has shocked everyone and spontaneous concentrations in several countries have not been long in coming. They mourn the death of the Kremlin’s number one enemy.
