Two attackers have been killed, one civilian has died and five other people have been injured, including three police officers, in an armed attack against the control of the Palace of Justice in the Çağlayan neighborhood of Istanbul, according to the Ministry of the Interior. The attack occurred at 11:46 local time (08:46 GMT) when the two attackers fired at the police checkpoint at the entrance to the building, home to several courts in that Istanbul neighborhood.
“Today a terrorist attack was attempted against the checkpoint in front of Gate C of the Çaglayan Courts. It has been determined that the traitors, who were neutralized, were members of the terrorist organization DHKP/C,” said the minister of Interior, Ali Yerlikaya. Police officers guarding the entrance to the courts they responded to the fire and in the shootout that broke out the two attackers were killed. Turkish media indicate that one of the attackers was a woman.
Minister Ali Yerlikaya attributed responsibility for the attack to the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C), a radical left armed group which has carried out attacks in Turkey for almost half a century, including on US interests in the country.
This is the second attack in Istanbul in the last ten days. In the previous one, on January 28, a 52-year-old Turkish citizen died after an attack by the Islamic State against a Catholic church.
The DHKP/C has not committed recent attacks and in the past he attacked the same Palace of Justice in Istanbul: in March 2015 two attackers managed to enter the courts and murdered a prosecutor in his office.
