The number of deaths in the devastating fires that hit the region of Valparaíso, 100 kilometers west of Santiago, increased to 122, the Legal Medical Service (SML) reported this Monday.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric said on Sunday that “It is the greatest tragedy that we have experienced as a country since the earthquake of February 27, 2010.″.
According to the aforementioned source, most of the deceased are in the city of Viña del Mar and its surrounding areas, such as Quilpué and Villa Alemana.
The chain of fires started on Friday in the Lake Peñuelas national park and quickly spread to coastal towns due to the wind and extreme temperatures.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the origin would be four outbreaks and that the indications suggest that they were not only provoked, but also planned, although at the moment no arrests have been made.
In addition to the deceased, there are hundreds of victims and more than 6,000 homes directly affected.
