At least Three people have been injured, one of them in critical condition, for a knife and hammer attack that occurred this Saturday at the Lyon railway station, in Paris. An incident that, for the moment, It is not being investigated as a terrorist attack.

The alleged perpetrator of the attack has been identified as a 32-year-old Malian from Italy and in a “legal situation” within France.

Police sources later specified to the same media that the detained Malian “has a profile that fits that of a homeless person,” did not present “indications of religious extremism“and among his belongings was found “medication for the treatment” of mental illnesses.

The incident, as police sources have explained to the French newspaper ‘Le Figaro’, began around 7:35 a.m. when the detainee set fire to his backpack on an escalator in pavilion 3 of the station’s subway.

After pushing a woman, the alleged perpetrator pulled a knife from his pants and stabbed an elderly man in the abdomen before hitting his head with a hammer. This victim is in very serious condition and his life is in danger, which is why he is undergoing emergency surgery.

Several people immediately intervened to subdue the alleged aggressor, including a railway agent. Two of these people suffered minor injuries to the jaw and wrist. The incident caused the temporary interruption of service, which has already been restored throughout the station.
