Brazil foresees a record turnover of US$ 1,819 million during Carnival

Brazil expects to reach a turnover of 9,000 million reais (US$ 1,819 million) during the edition of the Carnival this year, which represents a record figure for the country, according to forecasts released this Monday by the employers’ association.

Estimates for the most important party in the country grew by 10% compared to the previous year and exceed for the first time the numbers recorded prior to the covid-19 pandemic.

According to data provided by the National Confederation of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), in 2024 the creation of 25,000 temporary jobs nationwide is expected due to this festival, with the tourism sector being the most benefited, with hotel occupancy exceeding 60% on average.

It is also expected to increase compared to the previous year 19.4% the spending made by foreign tourists in Brazil during these dates, totaling more than US$ 900,000 million.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro, flagship of the Carnival and the most chosen destination by tourists, the forecast is that around 5.3 billion reais (about US$ 1.07 billion) will be generated.

However, the city that leads the classification is São Paulo, where the CNC estimates that total business will reach 16.3 billion reais (approximately US$3.3 billion).

As the CNC’s chief economist, Felipe Tavares, explains, the amount of income billed reflects “the general economic dynamics of each state and the greater the tourist flow, the resident population and the average income, the greater the projection.”

In this sense, São Paulo leads the ranking by far, since this region is home to nearly twenty% of the Brazilian population.

On the other hand, the Brazilian regions with the highest growth projection compared to the previous year during Carnival are Minas Gerais (20.2%), Parana (14.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.2%).

For Tavares“the professionalization of tourism” and “the greatest demand for these services”explain the emergence of less traditional destinations for tourists who seek to take advantage of these vacations not only for the big carnival parties.
