OAS says that disqualification of Machado “liquidates” free elections in Venezuela

The Organization of American States (OAS) pointed out this Sunday that the ratification of the disqualification of the opposition presidential candidate, María Corina Machado, “liquid” the “possibility of free, fair and transparent elections in Venezuela.”

In a statement, the organization stated that the disqualification ratified by the Venezuelan Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) responds to “the clear objectives of political persecution” of the Government of the president of that country, Nicolás Maduro.

“The recent actions of the Venezuelan dictatorship of prosecution and political imprisonment of opponents, especially those linked to the majority opposition leadership, already made it clear that the dictatorship had no intention of allowing clean and transparent elections to be held,” said the OAS.

He added that “María Corina Machado’s leadership is irreplaceable, as is all leadership that arises from the convictions and interests of the people”and hence “It would be pathetic and repulsive for someone to try to take that place, ignoring the indisputable popular pronouncement that occurred in the country in the primaries.”

“We must never believe that this dictatorship will fulfill agreements and commitments made, the most recurrent thing has always been the violation of them,” added the statement, in which the OAS undertakes not to abandon “the fight to return democracy to Venezuela”.

The TSJ of Venezuela ratified on Friday the 15-year disqualification of the presidential candidate of the main opposition coalition, María Corina Machado, which prevents her from competing in the elections scheduled for the second half of this year.

Through a ruling from the Political-Administrative Chamber, the Supreme Court declared inadmissible the request for precautionary protection introduced by the former liberal deputy, who hoped that this sanction would be lifted through this case review mechanism agreed between the Government and the opposition Unitary Platform. Democratic (PUD).

Following the TSJ’s decision, the US State Department announced on Saturday that it was reviewing its sanctions policy against Venezuela.

The former deputy swept the opposition primaries on October 22, when she received the 92.3% of the votes.
