Peru’s Attorney’s Office denounces President Pedro Castillo for alleged crime of influence peddling

The complaint is based on alleged meetings held by Pedro Castillo and a businesswoman, who won a tender for a road work in the Amazon.

The Peruvian Attorney’s Office denounced President Pedro Castillo on Friday before the Attorney General’s Office for the alleged commission of the crimes of illegal sponsorship and influence peddling in adjudication of road work in the Amazon.

“The Attorney General of the State, Daniel Soria, presented to the Attorney General a letter in which he denounces the President of the Republic, José Pedro Castillo Terrones, for the alleged commission of the crimes of illegal sponsorship and influence peddling”, indicates a statement from the Attorney General’s Office.

The complaint is based on the alleged meetings held by the businesswoman Karelim López and the president. According to Soria, these were carried out so that Castillo interceded so that the Puente Tarata III consortium won a public tender for the construction of a bridge over the Huallaga river, in the Amazon region of San Martín.

The consortium that the businesswoman represented won the tender with a contract for some 57.6 million dollars. The meetings were held in a home in the Breña district of Lima, according to a Sunday program.

“We have become aware of this complaint that has been filed. We are going to support the investigations, the president is willing to support them. The president at any moment will give the explanations“Said the chief of staff, Mirtha Vásquez.

Pedro Castillo, immersed in other investigations

The prosecutor explained in the statement a series of facts for which there are suspicions that the president is also immersed in the conduct of “influence peddling” that is being investigated in the Prosecutor’s Office.

Soria asks the Attorney General, Zoraida Ávalos, not to suspend the investigation once the investigation is opened. The attorney maintains that article 117 of the Constitution does not prohibit a current President of the Republic from being investigated.

On the other hand, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office carried out this morning the search of the homes in Lima of the former Secretary General of the Government Palace, Bruno Pacheco and López, investigated for the alleged crime of influence peddling and aggravated collusion in the tender.

Castillo, in power since July 28, narrowly defeated right-wing Keiko Fujimori in the presidential election, raising fears among Peruvians of a sharp turn toward socialism after decades of liberal policies. His term ends in 2026. (I)
