The Turkish Parliament approved this Tuesday in a general vote Sweden’s entry into NATOafter months of blockade because it was considered that the Scandinavian country was not doing enough against the Kurdish militants.

After the green light from Ankara, it is now Hungary It remains the only member state of the Alliance that has not yet ratified the accession of the Scandinavian country.

In the case of Turkey, President Erdogan sent the question of Swedish membership to NATO to the Turkish Parliament last October to put an end to a process that started during the Madrid summit in 2022 from the hand of Finland.

The process had been delayed because the Turkish authorities denounce the presence of pro-Kurdish movements in Sweden, especially with regard to any support for the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which Ankara considers a terrorist organization.

Furthermore, over the last few months there have been several incidents in Swedish territory related to the burning of copies of the Koran, the holy book of Islam, as well as against the figure of President Erdogan himself.

But now, the decision of the Turkish Parliament undoubtedly paves the way for Sweden. The protocol has been approved by 287 votes in favor and with 55 votes against.

The ball thus remains in Hungary’s court. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has already invited the Swedish Prime Minister to visit the country to “negotiate” the incorporation.
