A van migrant born in Honduras and made up of around 500 people was dissolved in Guatemala during the last hours, as confirmed this Sunday by official sources.
“The movement of people disintegrated,” The Guatemalan Migration Institute told journalists, referring to the migrant caravan that originated on Saturday in Honduras.
The group, initially made up of 500 migrants, mostly Hondurans and Venezuelans, left San Pedro Sula, in northern Honduras, on Saturday with the aim of reaching the United States, in search of the ‘American dream’.
The caravan lost strength upon entering Guatemala, specifically in the department (province) of Izabal and was blocked by local authorities without “use of force” and the “atmosphere” always remained “calm”.
The group of migrants entered Guatemala through the El Corinto border, 250 kilometers northeast of the capital of the Central American country.
According to the Guatemalan Migration Institute, migrants who did not meet the requirements to remain in Guatemala “They returned to the country of origin.”
The group gathered on Friday night at a bus terminal in San Pedro Sula with the idea of leaving in a caravan, although at first they were not sure if they would go through Corinto or Agua Caliente, another border point with Guatemala.
For its part, the Red Cross in Guatemala reported that it helped migrants who needed care of some kind.
Every year, thousands of migrants try to cross Guatemala in order to later venture through Mexico and eventually reach the United States, in search of better living conditions, according to official calculations.
The first migrant caravan of this type left in October 2018 from Honduras heading to the Agua Caliente border point, south of El Corinto.
However, during the Government of Alejandro Giammattei (2020-2024), Guatemala repressed several migrant caravans with public force to stop their passage.
