CAN countries create Andean Security Network to confront transnational crime

The countries that make up the Andean Community (CAN), Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peruagreed this Sunday to carry out coordinated police and military operations against organized crime in their border areas.

“Carry out coordinated police and/or military operations in the shortest possible time, when appropriate, in the border areas of the Member Countries, in order to confront transnational crimes,” reads the document signed by all the countries.

The agreement was one of the main points of an extensive Resolute Action Plan (PAR) that was approved by the ministers of Foreign Affairs and security of the countries of the organization, who met in Lima.

The decision was made during the XXIV Extraordinary Meeting of the Andean Council of Foreign Ministers together with the ministers responsible for security of each country, which was convened last week after the wave of violence that broke out in Ecuador.

The 24/7 Andean Security Network will have a regular point of contact and an alternate point of contact designated by each country to guarantee attention to this information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, according to the document.

The network will guarantee “a service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide and receive information, and/or request information from other countries (…) on the activity of criminal groups that have, or could have, transnational operation ”points out the commitment signed by the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) at the end of an extraordinary meeting of ministers.
