DeSantis abandons the US presidential campaign and endorses Trump

The governor of the state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, He suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination this Sunday and said he will support the favorite, the former US president. Donald Trump.

In a video posted on the social network “ask” to his supporters “to volunteer their time and donate their resources” without a “clear path to victory.”

“Consequently, today I am suspending my campaign,” he added.

His withdrawal from the race comes less than two days before the New Hampshire primary, where polls placed him far behind former President Trump and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Precisely, the withdrawal of DeSantis, after months of weakening his support, leaves only Haley, with few votes, between Trump and the nomination as the Republican Party candidate for the US presidential elections in November.

“It is clear to me that the majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance”DeSantis explained in the recording, pointing out that he has had differences with the former president, especially due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“You have my support because we cannot return to the old Republican guard of yesteryear or a repackaged form of overheated corporatism that Nikki Haley represents,” he pointed.

Trump, immersed in several legal proceedings against him, swept Iowa last Tuesday, where a 51% of Republican voters chose the former president over DeSantis, who only obtained one twenty-one%, and Haley, with a 19%.

African-American Senator Tim Scott also threw in the towel this week and announced his support for the tycoon.

“A Man and a Woman”

Many Republicans had pinned their hopes on DeSantis, who at only 45 years old was hailed by some as a rising star on the right.

But his candidacy, announced in late May, struggled to establish himself as a threat to the 77-year-old Trump.

This weekend he had already canceled all his television interviews, foreshadowing his decision.

DeSantis, a former Navy officer criticized for his lack of charisma, was elected governor of Florida in 2018 after receiving valuable support from Trump.

Since then, he frequently distanced himself from the former president and gained notoriety for a series of far-right stances on education, immigration and LGBT issues.

DeSantis appears almost daily in the national media to engage in culture wars against politicians, businesses and teachers “progressives” whom he accuses of imposing their ideology on Americans.

His most notable initiatives have included allowing Floridians to carry concealed weapons without a permit and imposing one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.

He also joined the governors of other Republican states in sending emigrants to Democratic cities in the northern and eastern United States.

Before Tuesday’s New Hampshire vote, Haley had largely refrained from attacking Trump, but has begun to question his mental acuity, drawing comparisons between him and 81-year-old Democrat Joe Biden.

At an event in Seabrook, New Hampshire, the former U.N. ambassador said DeSantis “He ran a great race, he has been a good governor”. “We wish him the best,” he added.

“That being said, now there is one man and one woman left,” continuous. “This comes down to ‘what do you want.’ Do you want more of the same or do you want something new?”
