Millions of Americans face freezing temperatures

Below zero temperatures in much of USA caused millions of Americans to face potentially dangerous cold on Sunday, as Arctic storms threatened near-storm conditions. snow in the northeast and several centimeters of snow in parts of the south.

The National Weather Service warned that windy, subfreezing conditions in Montana and the Dakotas could cause wind chills as low as -56 degrees Celsius (-70 degrees Fahrenheit).

An estimated 95 million people were under wind chill warnings or advisories below -17 C (zero F), according to the weather service. Forecasters said the severe cold was expected to extend into North Texas.

Snow could even fall in parts of northern Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia. In Shreveport, Louisiana, Mary Trammel was among those stocking up on bottled water, food and fuel for generators before subfreezing weather was forecast to dump an inch of snow and leave roads icy.

“It’s cold out here,” said Tramel, who told KSLA-TV that he bought bread and ingredients to make enough soup for several days. “I can get what I need and make sure the house is well stored.”

Authorities warned people to avoid driving on roads in Buffalo, New York, where snowfall of 1 to 2 feet (0.3 to 0.6 meters) was forecast. The strong storm forced the postponement of the NFL playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers from Sunday to Monday. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph (80 kph) were also possible, said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland.

“They are expected to see heavy snowfall but also extreme winds,” Taylor said. “That’s why they expect to see near-blizzard conditions at times.”
