It was reported that there is a backlog of more than 8.03 million pending procedures at the end of the 2021 fiscal period.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (Uscis) reported today that it had more than 8.03 million pending procedures at the end of fiscal 2021, a delay that has drawn criticism from legislators and immigrant advocates.
But despite the accumulation of cases, the director of Uscis, Ur M. Jaddou, praised the agency’s work on Thursday. “From responding to the pandemic to addressing delays in paperwork and implementing changes in operations, this was a year of growth and renewed vision.”
The most notable delays occurred in applications for entry into the United States by direct relatives of legal residents or US citizens and in requests for work permits.
“Every day my office provides assistance regarding delayed visas that put people’s jobs, the ability to visit sick relatives and more at risk,” Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux, Democrat of Georgia, wrote on her Twitter account.
“Congress and Uscis must bring the backlog of procedures under control,” added the legislator, who along with 40 other members of Congress sent a letter with that claim to the director of Uscis.
The legislators acknowledged that between fiscal periods 2015 and 2020 the backlog of backlogs at Uscis grew by 85% and added that this backlog “was exacerbated by policy changes” during the administration of former President Donald Trump.
As of September 30, when the 2021 fiscal period ended, Uscis had approved 6.14 million requests, had denied 808,335 and had 8.03 million pending procedures.
In that period, Uscis approved 182,217 work permit applications, rejected 1.8 million and had 1.48 million applications for employment authorization pending.
“This is especially devastating for DACA recipients, who are on H-4 visas, and the Asian-American community, which often ends up losing their ability to legally work in the United States,” the lawmakers’ letter stated.
This component of the figures directly affects immigrants who are in the country legally with work permits that must be periodically renewed.
In 2021, Uscis approved 673,956 requests for permission to enter the United States from direct family members and rejected 81,169 of those requests, concluding the fiscal period with 1.51 million pending procedures in this category. (I)
