Romania authorizes the hiring of 100,000 non-EU citizens due to a shortage of workers

The Romanian Government will issue work permits for 100,000 people from outside the country in 2024. European Union (EU) given the significant lack of labor in the country, where there are currently 500,000 vacancies.

According to data from Romania’s General Immigration Inspectorate, between January and October last year, more than 80,000 work permits were issued to third-country citizens and another 10,000 applications are still pending.

In several sectors, employers are having increasing difficulties in hiring personnel, as is the case, among others, in construction, with 64,000 vacancies, hospitality (28,000), courier (27,000) or surveillance and security (17,000), according to the Transtelex portal. ro.

The National Employment Office, for its part, has reported that the number of vacancies in the country in the period January-August 2023 increased to 506,601.

In the same period of 2022 this number stood at 399,040, that is, the annual increase was 27%.

In Romania, the unemployment rate in October 2023 according to Eurostat was 5.4%, slightly lower than the data recorded in the same month of 2022 (5.7%).
