Kim Ju-ae, daughter of the famous North Korean leader, could be the next leader of the northern half of the peninsula. According to South Korean intelligence, she has every chance to be the heir. Specifically, the head of the country’s military intelligence has been the one who has stated what has been speculated since her first public appearance: She is the main bet for the dictator’s successor.
It is not surprising, considering his public agenda: Kim Jong-un takes it to all kinds of events, from social gatherings to missile launches or meetings with military leadership. The last time Kim Ju-ae was seen in public, she was attending a New Year’s Eve celebration with her father. Senior party officials, soldiers and members of the diplomatic corps were also present.
Not much else is known about her either. Everything in her life is a mystery: It is not known for sure if her name is really Kim Jun-ae. And in fact, it was former basketball player Dennis Rodman, a close friend of the family, who revealed her existence in 2013, saying that on one of his trips to North Korea he had held the baby in his arms.
It is assumed that the girl is now 11 years old, although it is not certain. She is believed to be the middle of the three children she has from the marriage. The firstborn would be a boy, and in an extremely patriarchal country he would be the logical successor, but her multiple public appearances and respect for her figure make Seoul think that she is the chosen one.
