On a visit to the border of USA. and Mexico, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, the Republican Michael Johnsonblamed the president this Wednesday Joe Biden of the “unmitigated disaster” that represents the immigration crisis facing the nation.
“The country is at a breaking point due to unprecedented levels of illegal immigration and today we have seen first-hand the damage and chaos that the crisis at the border is causing to all of our communities,” Johnson said during a press conference in Eagle Pass (Texas).
The Republican, who made his first border incursion as “speaker” Along with more than sixty legislators from his party from 26 states, he said he met with local authorities and residents who demand solutions to the immigration crisis.
“It took President Joe Biden’s administration six months to dismantle more than 100 years of progress made by the Border Patrol”Johnson complained in reference to the termination of initiatives such as the “Stay in Mexico”which kept migrants on the northern border of Mexico while they waited for the resolution of their procedures to be able to enter the United States.
The legislator, an ally of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), visited this morning a migrant processing center operated by the Border Patrol in Eagle Pass, where thousands of foreigners surrender to the authorities when they cross the border.
Johnson indicated that the “disproportionate income” of foreigners has resulted in the filtration of migrants who are on the terrorist watch list in a year (2023) with the highest number of crossings in recent history.
“It is a disaster designed by the president himself,” criticized the Republican leader and added that the Administration has “open the borders to the whole world.”
“Instead of encouraging people to come, the president has to discourage them from entering the country,” highlighted Johnson, who again criticized the bilateral talks with Mexico.
Johnson, an ultra-conservative evangelical, was elected at the end of last October after managing to overcome the division of the Republican Party in the midst of legislative chaos to succeed the conservative Kevin McCarthy, ousted by an internal rebellion in his party.
“The United States continues to experience the worst border crisis in history while President Biden and Senate Democrats do nothing about it”Johnson said Tuesday, before leaving for the border.
Regarding the visit of Johnson and the Republican delegation to the border, the White House criticized legislators by pointing out that they voted in 2023 to eliminate more than 2,000 Border Patrol agents “and thus erode our ability to seize fentanyl.”
“In fact, right now, instead of joining the Biden Administration and members of both parties in the Senate to find common ground, Johnson continues to block funding,” said Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman.
“Republicans’ record against border security is defined by attempting to cut Customs and Border Protection staff, opposing unprecedented border security funding, and refusing to accept the request for supplemental funding.”Bates added in a statement.
Last week, Johnson questioned the bilateral meeting between the US Secretaries of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, and of State, Antony Blinken, with the President of Mexico, Manuel López Obrador, in their attempt to mediate the migrant crossing crisis.
