EU ready to provide assistance to Japan after earthquake and plane crash

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all those affected by the earthquake.”“, stated Borrell and Lenarcic, who praised the work of the rescue teams“who work tirelessly to save lives,” They indicated this Wednesday in a joint statement.

They added that “the European Union “stands in full solidarity with the Japanese population and authorities and is willing to offer all necessary support to the authorities in this time of need.”

Already this Tuesday, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, had expressed the European Union’s solidarity with Japan and its willingness to provide assistance.

“Europeans support the Japanese people after the devastating earthquakes,” Michel wrote on the social network X, in a message addressed to the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida.

“We mourn with you the devastation and loss of life,” continued the president of the European Council.

The city of Wajima, about 500 kilometers from Tokyo and located very close to the epicenter of the earthquake, is one of the hardest hit by the earthquake, which caused the collapse of about 25 buildings, many of them private homes, in this town of about 27,000 inhabitants.

On the other hand, this Wednesday the investigation began into the collision on the runway on Tuesday between a commercial flight and a Coast Guard plane in which five people died.
