The Government of Japan has recorded a new aftershock of magnitude 4.9 in the Ishikawa prefecture, located on the western coast, just two days after an earthquake claimed the lives of more than 60 people and caused numerous damages to buildings.

This new tremor occurred this Wednesday around 10:54 a.m. (2:54 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) about twelve kilometers deepwithout any tsunami warning having been activated.

Since New Year’s Day, when the earthquake occurred, 448 earthquakes have occurred, as reported by the Japanese Meteorological Agency. The agency has indicated that seismic activity continues in Ishiwaka prefecture, where there is a greater risk of house collapses and landslides, so it has asked the population to pay attention to future tremors and inclement weather.

The Japanese authorities Search and rescue efforts for missing people continue and so far they have confirmed the death of 64 people, most of them in the cities of Wajima and Suzu. Furthermore, there are a total of 300 people injured in the aforementioned prefectureof which about 22 are in serious condition.

The earthquake had its epicenter about 30 kilometers northwest of Wajima and a depth of 16 kilometers, triggering an unusual major tsunami warning, although by Tuesday morning all warnings had been lifted. However, the Japanese Meteorological Agency encouraged the population of affected areas to refrain from approaching the sea.
