The warship Iranian Alborz entered the Red Sea through the strategic Bab al Mandeb Strait, the news agency reported Tasnimat a time of intense tensions in this important waterway.
“The destroyer Alborz entered the Red Sea (…) passing through Bab al Mandeb”which separates the Horn of Africa from the Arabian Peninsula, Tasnim said, without specifying the reasons for the deployment.
He added that Iran’s naval fleet has been operating in the area “to secure sea routes, repel pirates, among other purposes since 2009”.
Impact of conflicts in the Red Sea
In early December, the United States created a multinational naval task force for the Red Sea following a series of missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, allied with Iran, against merchant ships that forced shipping companies to suspend navigation in the area.
The Houthis claim the attacks were in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is fighting the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
According to the International Chamber of Shipping, 12% of world trade passes through the Red Sea. On Monday, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said his country was “willing to take direct action” against the Houthis “to deter threats to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.”
The United States accused Iran of being “deeply involved” in the Houthi attacks. However, Iran denies the allegations and claims that the Houthi rebels were acting on their own.
