Guyana records 7% increase in rice production and 28% increase in sugar production in 2023

The government of Guyana reported this Sunday a seven percent increase in the production of rice this year, obtaining revenues of US$ 210 million and 28% in the production of sugarcompared to 2022.

“In 2023 we saw an increase in rice production by seven percent, which translates into the production of 653,706 metric tons”said Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.

According to data provided by the Guyanese Minister of Agriculture, rice yield increased from 6.2 tons to 6.3 tons per hectare.

“We earn approximately 45.2 billion Guyanese dollars which is equivalent to US$210 million in 2023. More than US$3 billion more than in 2022″Mustapha highlighted, pointing out that the increase in income is due to Guyana being able to access more international markets.

In this sense, the minister specified that a laboratory in Guyana will carry out research with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the international organization that has been collaborating with the Latin American country to study biocertified rice or rice of a variety enriched with zinc.

Likewise, Mustapha stated that the ministry will continue to explore options to expand its rice production in the near future.

On the other hand, he assured that he will invest US$ 38.6 million Americans in the sugar industry after recording an increase in 28% or 13,155 metric tons in sugar production, compared to 47,049 metric tons in 2022.

Guyana also reported an increase in 54% of sugar production that was marketed as packaged sugar in 2023, compared to the 48% in 2022.

“We are clearly seeing a revitalization of the sugar industry and we see that more and more people are benefiting,” Mustapha settled.
