Biden arrived in Santa Cruz on Wednesday and was only seen in front of television cameras on Saturday when he went to mass in Christiansted, the largest city on the island.

As the second Catholic president of the United States after John F. Kennedy (1961-1963), Biden has the habit of attending mass every Saturday, whether in Washington; in Wilmington (Delaware), the city where he grew up, or now on an island in the Caribbean.

After the mass, Biden and the first lady recorded an interview with television host Ryan Seacrest, which will air tonight as part of a special program on ABC.

Later, the president and the first lady had dinner at Too Chez, one of the best restaurants on the island, and later the president appeared before the press to chat for a while.

When asked what his New Year’s resolution is, Biden jokingly responded: “Come back next year.” The president joked a little more with the press and immediately disappeared in the armored vehicle without addressing more sensitive issues such as Ukraine or Donald Trump, who is his favorite to be his rival in the 2024 elections.

Several members of the Republican Party have harshly criticized Biden in recent days for going on vacation to Santa Cruz just after spending Christmas with his family at Camp David, the presidential residence in the mountains of the state of Maryland, near the US capital. .

Republican lawmakers such as Jim Jordan of Ohio and Andy Biggs of Arizona have attacked Biden for going on vacation at a time when there is a significant increase in the arrival of migrants at the border between the United States and Mexico.

However, while Biden traveled to Santa Cruz on Wednesday, senior officials of his government, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, met in Mexico with the president of that country, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to discuss the challenges regarding migration and security.

Likewise, on Friday, Biden issued a harsh statement against Russia for the wave of bombings and drones it had launched against Ukraine, the most intense since the start of the war in February 2022, and took the opportunity to urge the US Congress to approve more funds. for Ukraine.

Other presidents, such as Republican George W. Bush (2001-2009) and Democrat Barack Obama (2009-2017), also came under criticism from the opposition for going on vacation while the country faced major challenges.

Biden plans to return to Washington on Tuesday, after the New Year’s celebration, and already has several events scheduled for January, including a trip on the 6th to the key state of Pennsylvania, in what will be an intense year for American politics.
