Spain confirms abandonment of nuclear energy and extends deadlines for renewable projects

Spain confirmed on Wednesday its plans to close the country’s nuclear power plants in 2035, while presenting energy measures which include the extension of deadlines for renewable projects and the adjustment of renewable auctions.

The management of the radioactive waste and the dismantling of the plants, whose closure will begin in 2027, will cost about 20.2 billion euros (US$22.4 billion) and will be covered by a fund supported by the plant operators, the Government said.

The future of nuclear power plants of the country, which generate approximately one fifth of the spanish electricity, was a hot topic during the recent electoral campaign, in which the Popular Party (PP), of the conservative opposition, promised to reverse the planned progressive elimination. More recently, a major business lobby advocated for expanding the use of these plants.

Among other measures, the rules governing the development of new projects were modified. green energy and the renewable auctions.

The Government agreed to extend key administrative deadlines for new projects. The deadline to obtain a construction permit, for example, was increased by six months, to 49 months.

The renewable auctions may now include qualitative criteria that take into account social and environmental standards to “recognize the added value of European products“said the Ministry of Energy in a statement.
