After their release, Palestinians denounce torture by Israel

Palestinians detained and later released by Israel reported having suffered torture by the Israeli army, which denied these accusations.

The armed forces of the Jewish State detained hundreds of Palestinians during their ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, which began on October 27 as part of the war with Hamas.

After their release, around twenty of them were admitted this Sunday to the Najjar hospital in Rafah, in the south of the Palestinian enclave.

“They have bruises and traces of blows on their bodies,” said Marwan al Hams, director of that hospital.

According to images that AFP was able to take, Nayef Ali, 22 years old and one of the detainees, has cuts on his body and signs of blows to his wrists.

They separated the men from the women and locked us in a house that (Israeli soldiers) had taken over.“explained Ali, who said he was detained in eastern Gaza City.

“They handcuffed us with our hands behind our backs for days. We had nothing to drink or eat. They didn’t allow us to go to the bathroom either. “Just blows and blows,” he added.

According to him, the detainees were then transported to a border area with Israel, where a “glacial cold”.

“They threw water on us before taking us to a prison (to Israel), where they tortured and beat us again”he explained.

Jamis al Bardini, another 55-year-old detainee, said he had suffered similar mistreatment.

They threw cold water on us during the day and beat us at night. “Then, they took us to a prison, whose name and location we did not know.”explained Al Bardini.

The Israeli army had already received harsh criticism after the dissemination in recent weeks of images of the group arrest of dozens of half-naked Palestinians, blindfolded and with their hands handcuffed behind their backs.

Contacted about the accusations of torture this Sunday, the armed forces assured that “Detained persons receive treatment in accordance with international law.” “During their detention, they receive food and sufficient hydration,” they added.
