Ecuador reports first case of omicron variant

Ecuador reported on Tuesday the first case of the omicron variant of the coronavirus in a traveler who arrived from South Africa, reported the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón.

Garzón said at a press conference that the case was confirmed after laboratory studies but that “the patient is well, has no serious symptoms, is isolated, we have made epidemiological fences … also fences of close contacts ”.

He indicated that the traveler arrived in the country carrying two negative PCR tests and with a vaccination card with the two doses, but that upon arrival he began with symptoms and immediately samples were taken and he and his two row companions were isolated. on the plane, although these were negative in tests.

The vaccination program promoted by the government of President Guillermo Lasso has managed to immunize 12 million Ecuadorians, out of a total of 17.3 million, in just under eight months.

Ecuador has so far registered a total of 533,457 infections and 33,561 deaths from COVID-19.
