The Colombian government, the unions and the unions reached an agreement on Tuesday to increase the minimum wage for workers by 10.07% by 2022, reaching one million pesos, about US $ 256.
“I want to express my joy because today history is being made in Colombia. Today we have achieved the most important real increase in the minimum wage in almost 50 years, and the most important nominal increase of this century ”, announced President Iván Duque in an official statement.
The agreement also contemplates an increase of 10.07% for transportation assistance, so the total salary will be 1’117,172 pesos (US $ 286).
The salary increase was given by a unanimous decision of the salary negotiation table after several meetings. The union of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) celebrated it and said through Twitter that it was a “struggle of many years and a result of the social outbreak”, in reference to the massive social demonstrations that began in April of this year and lasted for three months against government reforms, inequality and the disproportionate use of force by the police.
