President Javier Milei and his government team mobilized on Sunday to the town of Bahía Blanca, southeast of the Argentine capital, where a strong storm left at least 13 dead as a result of the collapse of a roof of a sports establishment. The storm also caused multiple damages in the area.
The tragedy in Bahía Blanca occurs a week after Milei assumed the presidency. The far-right leader arrived in that city dressed in a military uniform and accompanied by his sister and general secretary of the presidency, Karina Milei, as well as several of his ministers and his medical staff to attend to the damage caused by the storm. The governor of Buenos Aires, Alex Kicillof, was also in the area.
The electrical storms that occurred in a short space of time and the winds of 150 kilometers per hour (95mph) caused the roof of the Bahiense Norte Club where a sporting event was being held to collapse, causing the death of 13 people, one “catastrophe” and a stage “very hard” as Minister Bullrich declared to the local press.
The storm left multiple damages in the city of Bahía Blanca, which was without power in several sectors, as well as in other parts of the province of Buenos Aires and/or the capital itself, where some infrastructure was affected. In addition, there were reports of trapped people, blocked streets, destroyed cars and dozens of fallen trees in different places.
In the Palermo and Belgrano neighborhoods of the capital, the storm even affected one of its iconic monuments, the Recoleta flower, with dozens of trees fallen and uprooted, leaving squares, parks, bike paths and roads.
The Ezeiza airport in the Argentine capital suspended flights for a few hours on Sunday, although operations were later resumed. The National Meteorological Service maintained an alert level on the day.
