Erdogan asks Biden to impose ceasefire in Gaza out of “historical responsibility”

The president of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoganheld a telephone conversation this Thursday with his American counterpart, Joe Bidenduring which he insisted that Washington has “a historic responsibility” to impose a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The Turkish head of state conveyed to Biden the urgent need to stop the “human drama” in Gaza and assured him that a ceasefire could be quickly imposed if the US abandons its position of unconditionally supporting Israel, reports the Turkish Anadolu agency.

Erdogan recalled that not only international but also American public opinion is increasingly calling for a lasting ceasefire, the implementation of which is “a historic responsibility for USA”.

The Turkish president also mentioned in the telephone conversation the still pending ratification by the Turkish Parliament for Sweden’s accession to NATO, as well as the sale of American F-16 fighters to Turkey.

In statements to the press in recent weeks, Erdogan has hinted that, contrary to what he stated until this summer, the sale of fighter jets, blocked by the US Congress, is a fundamental factor for Turkey to give the green light to the entry of Sweden in NATO.

“If they have a Congress, I have a Parliament”Erdogan said several times, alluding to the still pending ratification in the chamber, in which the coalition of his party, the Islamist AKP, with the ultranationalist MHP, has an absolute majority.
