The United Nations General Assembly approved this Tuesday a resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip, after The United States will veto another in the same sense in the Security Council and for Egypt and Mauritania to formally request an emergency meeting.
The vote has ended with 153 votes in favor, 23 abstentions and 10 votes againstthose of Israel, Guatemala, Czech Republic, Austria, Liberia, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and the USA. The resolution, however, is not binding.
Specifically, the text “reiterates its demand that all parties fulfill their obligations under international law” regarding the protection of civilians, while also demanding “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
Later, the spokesman for the Presidency of the Palestinian Authority, Nabil Abu Rudeina, thanked the support of all the countries that voted in favor of the resolution: “The world overwhelmingly supports the Palestinian people“, he assured.
For his part, before the vote, the representative of Israel Before the UN, Gilad Erdan has asserted that if the world really wants a ceasefire, they would have to “call the Hamas offices and ask for Yahya Sinwar”, the leader of the Islamist group in the enclave.
In turn, Izzat al Rishq, one of the senior officials of Hamas, has welcomed the UN resolution and called on the international community to continue putting pressure on Israel to adhere to the ceasefire. “The American position, blatantly biased towards Zionist fascism, is the reason for the increasing loss of the ‘moral center’ that Biden claims,” he said.
This vote took place after Washington will veto a resolution presented to the UN Security Council to request a humanitarian ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave and that the secretary general of the organization, António Guterres, invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter, urging the body to “put pressure” to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
