Azerbaijan, a major oil producer, will host the COP29 Climate Summit in 2024, officially announced the presidency of COP28 being held in Dubai. “The COP28 Presidency congratulates Azerbaijan for having been chosen to host COP29 next year,” said the Emirati presidency.
“We look forward to working together to continue driving climate action, ensuring we keep 1.5°C within reach and leave no one behind,” he added. The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev, already announced last Saturday that “there is consensus” for the country to host COP29, after rival Armenia withdrew its candidacy.
Armenia, Azerbaijan’s adversary, pledged to voluntarily withdraw its candidacy to host the next climate summit and expressed confidence that Baku receive international support as a possible host of this event.
With this election, the climate summit organized by the United Nations, It will be celebrated for the third consecutive year by a country that produces oil or gas, one of the main causes of global warming.
