WHO warns that omicron is expanding at a rate never seen before with other variants

The omicron variant if you are expanding at a rate that has not been observed until now with no other previous variant of the coronavirus. This is how the WHO this Tuesday, at a press conference where its CEO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, pointed out that cases of this new variant have been confirmed in 77 countries. However, as he has indicated, the reality is probably already present in most countries even though it hasn’t been detected yet.

The head of the World Health Organization has expressed the concern of the body he directs that people are discarding the omicron variant as mild, warning of the danger of underestimating the virus. “Even if omicron causes less severe disease, the large number of cases could again overflow unprepared sanitary systems“, the expert has warned.

Furthermore, Ghebreyesus has issued a warning: “Vaccines alone will not lift any country out of this crisis -He has asserted-. Countries can and should prevent the expansion of omicron with measures that work today. “In this sense, the WHO director has urged combining vaccination with the rest of prevention measures against COVID-19, citing the use of masks, social distancing, ventilation and hand hygienes.

On the other hand, the expert has expressed concern over the fact that several countries have begun to administer booster dose to the entire adult population in the face of omicron expansion, despite the fact that, as stated, there is no evidence of the effectiveness of the ‘booster’ doses in the face of the variant. In this regard, he noted that WHO is concerned that these programs further accentuate the inequity in access to vaccines in the world and has advocated prioritizing the protection of the most vulnerable.
