EU negotiations on the draft amendment to the so-called Building Directive is coming to an end. The final version of the project is to be ready this year, and then it is to be adopted by the European Union authorities – he reminds.
Ban on installing fossil fuel stoves? Key dates have been announced
The final version of the project assumes the introduction of a ban on installing furnaces using fossil fuels, including natural gas, first in new buildings (in 2028-2030), and then in existing buildings (in 2035-2040), which would undergo a thorough renovation, and with exchange of heat sources with it.
The draft amendment to the EU Building Directive lists three most important points. From 2027, Member States will not be able to provide subsidies or tax breaks for the installation of fossil fuel stoves. From 2027, new public buildings, and from 2030, all other newly constructed buildings will have to be zero-emission. It will not be possible to install and use oil, coal or pellet fuels in them. However, from 2029, the obligation to install photovoltaic panels is to be introduced. This will apply to all new residential buildings.
The European Commission wants to implement the climate plan
The climate plan assumes reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the EU by 55%. by 2030 compared to the 1990 level (the ultimate goal is climate neutrality by 2050). The current provisions supporting decarbonization are insufficient – they were established when the emission target was 40%. Europe’s energy transformation is expected to accelerate, among others: due to the war in Ukraine and the withdrawal from Russian raw materials.
