Alberto Fujimori was president of Peru throughout the decade of the 90s. He is a descendant of Japanese immigrants and He was born in Lima 85 years ago. Fujimori considers himself 100% Peruvian, as we can hear in the video. He came to power in 1990, when the Maoist guerrilla Sendero Luminoso had left thousands of victims in Peru.
Fujimori supported paramilitary groups that operated by executing civilians suspected of collaborating with the guerrillas. They murdered 15 people in the Barrios Altos massacre and also killed another 9 students and a teacher for having alleged ties to the Shining Path.
During his mandate, Fujimori received complaints of electoral fraud and there was a self-coup d’étatto seize legislative power and videos of bribes to politicians and businessmen came to light. After this, his government fell and he took refuge in Japan, from where he resigned from office.
In 2005, Fujimori was arrested in Santiago de Chile and two years later extradited to Peru, where several trials against him began. He was sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment and went to prison in 2009.
After serving 14 of the 25 years imposed on him, he is now free, after The Constitutional Court of Peru ordered his “immediate” release.
