7.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Indonesia and tsunami alert is activated

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The USGS indicated that the earthquake had its epicenter 100 km north of the town of Maumere with a depth of 18.5 km in the Flores sea at 0320 GMT.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said “There is the possibility of dangerous waves for the coasts located 1,000 km from the epicenter of the earthquake”.

According to the USGS, there is little chance of death from the earthquake, although it recalled that “Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary damage, such as tsunamis and landslides that could have contributed to the casualties”.

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of intense telluric activity that extends from Japan to Southeast Asia.

In 2004, Indonesia suffered a devastating 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, which triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 in the region, including 170,000 in Indonesia.

In 2018, another powerful tremor shook the Lombok island, followed by several more earthquakes in the following two weeks that left more than 550 dead.

That same year, an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 and a subsequent tsunami in the isla Sulawesi left more than 4,300 dead or missing.
