Finance, trade and gender equality mark the agenda of COP28 on Monday

The finance and the trade will share the spotlight tomorrow with accountability and gender equality as the main topics that will be addressed in the different sessions of the Summit Climate change of the United Nations (COP28) taking place in the Emirati city of Dubai.

This second thematic day focuses on “scale, access and affordability through macro-level reform of the international financial architecture, developing sustainable financial markets and strengthening voluntary carbon markets”according to the UN program published on the summit website.

The intention of these sessions is “boost private sector financing and improve equity” after analyzing that “financial and commercial systems require drastic and rapid change” to be able to meet the climate objective.

The program will also examine accountability mechanisms that help translate ambition into tangible results after assessing the global focus on private sector participation, commitments and financing.

Regarding trade, more specifically, they will deal with its growth “equitable and intelligent”, where “decarbonization of the supply chain, transition and resilience” will take on special relevance.

Far from financial and commercial aspects, the agenda of the day also includes analysis and the definition of “gender-sensitive policies” and how better access to finance is “fundamental” to achieve a just transition “that promotes gender equality and allows the full and meaningful participation of women and girls in climate action.”

Today, the first thematic day of COP28 focused on Health, with new agreements related to the financing of programs aimed at climate health, as well as Relief, Recovery and Peace, thus addressing losses and damage in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.

COP28 will run until December 12, when the climate summit Presidency is expected to announce the agreements reached by the 198 participating parties to address the climate crisis and its effects.
