Due to heavy rains and floods in the Brazilian states of Bahia (northeast) and Minas Gerais (southeast), Brazilian authorities decided on Sunday to evacuate more than 5,600 people in more than 50 municipalities that are in an emergency situation.
The most devastated regions are in the south of Bahia, where there are 3,740 displaced people and in total some 70,000 affected, five dead and 175 injured, reported the Civil Defense of the region after almost a week of a storm that leaves homes flooded, rivers overflowing , roads and bridges destroyed and some isolated towns.
Bahian Governor Rui Costa declared an emergency situation in at least 30 municipalities due to torrential rains, which especially hit the cities of Itamaraju, Jucuruçu, Porto Seguro, Prado and Teixeira de Freitas.
President Jair Bolsonaro and his Ministers of Regional Development, Rogério Marinho, and of Citizenship, João Roma, flew over Bahia, as did Costa, of the opposition Workers Party (PT), of former President Lula.
“Our presence is in solidarity with the people of Bahia,” said Bolsonaro, who is seeking reelection in 2022.
“Progressively, with the reduction of water, we will begin the recovery of the cities and the reconstruction of many houses lost in higher places,” said Governor Costa from a rescue operations center.
In the north of Minas Gerais, which borders southern Bahia, the storm left more than 1,900 people evicted from their homes, the vast majority in the Jequitinhonha Valley and in Mucuri, according to a balance of the Civil Defense, and the government declared 31 municipalities in an emergency situation.
Civil Defense teams, the Fire Department and volunteers are deployed in various communities to rescue people trapped or displaced after the rains and to help with the distribution of food.
The Bolsonaro government recognized the emergency in 31 municipalities of Minas Gerais and in 17 of Bahia for the allocation of resources, created a task force with five ministries and authorized the deployment of the military for rescue operations and relocation of displaced people.
In Rio de Janeiro, the storm also alerts the authorities after some damage to homes and the forecast of winds of up to 70 km / h. (I)
