Visa experiences Latin America recovery on Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday

Transactions with Visa cards in Latin America and the Caribbean during Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday grew by 48% compared to the same days in 2020, a sign of the “clear recovery” that is being seen in the region after the pandemic.

Such strong growth also speaks of how both days of discount sales have taken root in the calendar of Latin American consumers, Rodrigo Santoro, head of Visa Consulting & Analytics for Latin America and the Caribbean, told Efe this Friday.

Santoro emphasized that the data obtained is not the result of a survey of businesses or consumers but the result of analyzing transactions already carried out, which means that they have a degree of total reliability and show real behavior patterns that can help businesses a lot. Visa partners.

Transactions with Visa cards on the days of Black Friday and Cyber ​​Monday (a period that runs from November 26 to 30), both those made online and in person, grew in number compared to 2020, the year of the pandemic, in that movement restrictions and other preventive measures led to an acceleration of the penetration of electronic commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The report was made from data collected in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru and the Dominican Republic.

Of the total transactions, 23% corresponded to electronic commerce, a percentage “quite representative and strong”, in the words of the Visa executive, while the remaining 77% corresponded to purchases with “card present”, as Visa calls them, in the that there was a “quite accelerated” growth.

The sectors where growth was most noticeable were wholesale trade, entertainment and travel, and airlines.

In Brazil and Chile is where the transactions in wholesale stores increased the most, in which small businesses in the region tend to be supplied, and Colombia, Chile and Peru were the countries where more operations to acquire entertainment products or services were carried out.

Travel and airline transactions grew equally in all countries studied, Santoro said.

In Peru there was considerable growth (more than 100%) in electronic commerce transactions, while in Chile and Colombia the growth was between 30% and 40% and in Brazil and Costa Rica it was around one twenty%.

Santoro pointed out that this study also shows that Cyber ​​Monday is becoming increasingly popular in the calendar of Latin American consumers.

Transactions made on that day dedicated to electronic products in the countries studied grew by 46% compared to 2020.
